The Mary C presents a NEW series using children’s literature and illustration to promote a love of reading and to instigate deeper, age appropriate conversations on specific current events such as diversity, bullying, care for our earth, understanding grief/loss, self-love, etc.

Our first program will celebrate the spirit of Juneteenth while focusing on a young child’s view of antiracism and privilege in our greater world today. We aim to take fear out of what children may be hearing in the news and allow for open communication and question asking with a professional.

Please join us Friday, June 19th at 2PM in the Trent Lott Theatre at The Mary C. where guest speaker, Deborah Quave , will read “Amazing Grace” by Mary Hoffman’, “Race Cars” by Jenny Devenny and “I can do hard things” by Gabby Garcia. With the support of The Book Porter – a general independent book store soon to be located on Porter Avenue in downtown Ocean Springs – each family will also receive a free copy of “Brown Girl Dreaming” by Jacqueline Woodson to read together and keep the conversation going in your own home.
For opportune viewing of the storybooks and illustrations, space will be limited, and reservations are required. 10 children (Recommended ages 6-10) will be welcome to sit on stage while parents and other family members (up to 5 per child) are welcome to participate from the theater seats. This event will last 45mins to an hour. You may RSVP at https://www.facebook.com/events/869826246847861/.
