SHIRLEY CAHELA

I graduated from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, and served for 20 years as an officer in the United States Air Force; I retired with the rank of Major. My family and I have lived in Ocean Springs since 2002.

After Hurricane Katrina, my family was in turmoil facing a difficult period in our lives, due to multiple life-threatening medical conditions. Living in Ocean Springs and admiring the works of many talented artists, I was inspired to start beading and designing jewelry as a distraction to keep my hands and concentration focused on my art, instead of worrying.

ARLENE GOMES

Arlene Gomes was born Washington, D.C. She attended Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia where she received a Bachelor Degree in Secondary Education with a Double Major of Concentration in Instrumental Music/ Clarinet Performance and Vocal Music. During her senior year she was 1st Chair/Solo Clarinetist of O.D.U.’s Wind Ensemble and Orchestra. She was one of 3 musicians selected to perform with the State of Virginia’s Intercollegiate Band. Arlene is certified to instruct all instruments including Orchestral Strings K-12. She is currently the Director of the Biloxi High School Orchestra, Biloxi Jr. High Orchestra as well as the Mary C. O’Keefe Youth Symphony at the Mary C. O’Keefe Cultural Center in Ocean Springs.

My Christian faith helped me to find peace and comfort during trying times, being able to create beautiful pieces, always praying as I beaded.  “Beading and praying” through the suffering was my way of overcoming difficult circumstances. Ocean Springs is my home and I love the artistic community and the enjoyment it brings to locals as well as tourists.

It started as a hobby, and then I was encouraged to show my jewelry at local art markets and festivals. My influences are the beautiful natural products of the sea and the earth, as well as the colors and textures found on the local beaches. I use a variety of sea shells, pearls, natural stones, Swarovski and Czech crystals, glass, ceramic, and wood beads. I like to create a piece with a specific lady in mind. I keep her in my prayers as I bead, not knowing who will wear my piece close to her heart. Just as my family and I survived a difficult period in our lives, my hopes are that the ladies who wear my pieces will find the peace, serenity, strength, and courage to face any hardship which may come their way.

She has 30+ years of professional performance on clarinet , flute and alto saxophone. She has judged and been a guest conductor for county and district competitions. She has taught and conducted High School, Jr. High School, and Elementary Bands, Orchestras, Concert Choirs and Show Choirs as well as Private Studio Instruction. Her students have been continuously selected for the top seat positions on the District, State and National levels. She uses motivational techniques along with carefully selected method studies that provide students with the confidence and skills that enable them to perform at higher levels.

JEANETTE LINDSEY

Jeanette Lindsey has been teaching water color at Mary C for over a year and has been painting for over 40 years. Although her major in college was Business, she minored in art.  Jeanette began painting folk art where she learned the basics of color and blending.  Jeanette studied under Evelyn Huxley and then learned to china paint in Mobile, Alabama.  A friend had bought his daughter a set of water colors and lent them to Jeanette – it was love at first “brush stroke.”  In 2008 Jeanette spent a week with Catherine Anderson in Maine.  Even though Jeanette had worked with water color for years, Catherine introduced her to a whole new meaning of washes.  Although water color is sometimes seen as unforgiving, it is so much fun.  Come and learn to paint.

GIGI REEKS

Although born in San Francisco following World War II, Gigi Reeks has been an Ocean Springs-Biloxi "native" since she was five years old. With both parents (the artist-sculpto Harry Reeks and the painter Chloe Reeks) also being the most constant and greatest appreciators of the Classical and Jazz genres, she grew as a child surrounded with a plethora of artistic sights and sounds. The Mississippi Gulf Coast has always been an area rich in its "sense of place" and in its arts. Her musical background as a child was as the accompanist for Ocean Springs Junior High School Choir under Mus. Angela Hubbard, and the same for the Ocean Springs High School Choir under Mrs. Hubbard and Ms. Teresa Spreigel. Her formal college degrees are the Bachelor of Music, double major in voice and piano performance and Music Education from the University of Southern Mississippi; and the Master of Music degree with double emphasis in vocal pedagogy (the study of the teaching of a particular discipline) and chorale direction. Additionally, she is currently studying Composition at the doctoral level with Dr. James Walsh of Loyola University of New Orleans and Schoenberg Twelve-Tone theory at the doctoral level with Dr. Janna Saslaw, also at Loyola university of New Orleans.

Her greatest childhood influence in music was Mrs. Jane Wade, her public school elementary music teacher. She saw in her and learned from her the joy that music can be to all of us. She strives to give her students what it is that Mrs. Wade gave to her. Professionally, Gigi has always, (without ever a stopped time in between congregations) been a church pianist/organist/choirmaster-beginning at age eleven. Three years ago, she retired from Christus Victor Lutheran Church in Ocean Springs after twenty years service. She now worships and sings in the choir at St. John's Episcopal Church and fins great joy in the simplicity of that role and the camaraderie of her fellow musicians. Additionally, she teachers Music Appreciation for Mississippi Gulf Coast Coast Community College. Her greatest love in teaching is individual instruction in piano and voice. Sacred Choral Music is her compositional calling-even though at Loyola, her writing assignments range from Symphonic works and jazz to experimental music.
