Encaustics as a Sculptural Medium

Alpaca to Afghan - Fiber Arts Workshop

Press Mold Workshop

From Perception to Publication - What It’s Like to Write & Publish a Novel

Tuition Fee: $200 + Materials Fee (determined per workshop)

ENCAUSTICS AS A SCULPTURAL MEDIUM

The design for this workshop is to enable you to explore the versatility, manipulative quality and the sometimes malleability of the encaustic medium as a sculptural medium.  Most of us are very well versed in painting or applying encaustics on a 2 dimensional surface and yes, that can be very process oriented and defining.  However, the capacity of the encaustic medium reaches far beyond that.  The flexibility of beeswax along with the stability and rigidity of resin brings into play an entirely different dynamic.  You are dealing with two opposing entities, yet when brought together can give you the ultimate, sculptural medium.

In this two-day workshop we will talk about, examine, explore and manipulate this medium we call encaustics, as a medium for sculpture.

When we define “Sculpture” in the realm of encaustics medium, we are talking of anything in the range of relief sculpture to hand formed three dimensional work to random materials coated in encaustic medium.

Participants should have a basic working knowledge of encaustics and have their own arsenal of encaustic materials:  medium, paints, brushes, hot plate (or equitable heating source), tools, heat gun/torch, and supports, that they bring with them.  A materials list for the sculptural items can be obtained HERE.  For a fee, the list of additional sculptural items will be available for purchase prior to workshop

Instructor: Annette Blocker

Alpaca to Afghan - Fiber Arts Workshop

Students will experience the art of hand-processing fleece, all the way from the animal to hand-knit afghan. The class begins meeting a live alpaca. After a brief history and biology lesson about this wonderful camelid, cousin to the llama, hands-on processing of their luxurious fleece will begin. Hand tools are used throughout the process to simulate how fleece was processed in primitive times, prior to the industrial revolution. Upon completion of the class, students will have a total
experience in the hand-made yarn process through finished product.
(Note: my recommendation is that the final afghan be displayed at the facility for a period of time and then donated to a local charity.)

Day 1
• Meet a live alpaca
• Brief history of alpacas, their introduction to this country from South
America, and their life on farms in America
• Learn about fleece and how it is grown and shorn
• Process fleece (skirt and card) using hand tools to prepare for spinning.
Day 2
• Use drop spindles and spinning wheels to hand spin prepared fleece into yarn. Students will each receive their own spindle, hand-spun yarn and knitting needles as part of the class, as theirs to keep and practice their new skills later.
• Hand-spun yarn will be knitted into squares to be sewn together to create a beautiful afghan.

$35 Materials Fee due on the first day of the workshop.
