Pilates and Plates

Ellen Miller, owner of Bayou Pilates in Ocean Springs will be leading this exciting, new Mary C class. Ellen is Mississippi's first Pilates instructor to be certified by the prestigious Pilates Method Alliance. Pilates is a system of slow and controlled exercises which focus on the core muscles of the body. The exercises are completely adaptable to every fitness level and many of the exercises can be done standing up. This class will focus on learning to identify and correctly engage the deep abdominal muscles and learning to exercise within a range of motion that's perfect for your body.

Each class will conclude with a Lunch and Learn demonstration in The Mary C cafe, where Chef Cheri Hires will show you how to eat clean and healthy, and enjoy a meal.

Calligraphy Classes

Basic Calligraphy

You see calligraphy (beautiful writing) everywhere. Envelopes, announcements, framed favorite quotes, name tags, kitchen labels, cookbooks, and invitations are just a few of the practical applications of this age old art. Enroll in our Beginner's Calligraphy class and learn a beautiful cursive writing style you will use throughout your life.

Intermediate Calligraphy

Intermediate Calligraphy is for those who have the basic knowledge and skill level to continue their growth in calligraphic art. Five 2.5 hour sessions are tailored to individual student's needs. New font styles, layout and presentation, illumination, and practical commercial uses of calligraphy are among the topics covered.

Artistic Method and Fun 101

Learn the ropes, or in this case brushes, colors, composition and balance. Follow along as Dustin Porta paints in acrylics, colorful expressive marine life and ocean scenes or strike out on your own and create your own image with the help and guidance of a professional artist. Learn, not just how to add different elements, but why? Also learn what makes for a well balanced image, and what gives a painting that finished, professional appearance. Along the way you'll learn the tips and tricks that Dustin has picked up in his travels, share stories and have a good time.

Linocut Card Making for the Season

Learn the engaging art of print making and create holiday or artistic cards for your friend and family. Students will learn how to create a simple lino-carving of their own design. Then using their own block, or pre-made holiday designs, the group will learn the inking and printing technique and create a stack of cards to take home with their carving. A fun class and a great way to create handmade cards for your loved ones.

Poetry Roundtable

It is the roundtable's job to see the masterpiece inside every piece of writing and to help the writer bring it out. A three hour workshop for writers off all levels. Beginners will learn fundamentals and advanced students will be challenged to elevate their craft. Each student will bring one poem to be workshopped. Students send their work out in advance so everyone participating has had a chance to read and comment upon the workshop poems.

Beaded Jewelry - Making Workshop

Create unique jewelry pieces from a large assortment of high quality beads: crystals, cultured pearls, natural stones, sterling silver charms, etc. During each two-hour session, students will learn how to make necklaces, bracelets, and earrings, and will take home their own creations.

Landscape Painting in Acrylics

Learn about acrylic painting from local artist Bruce Seabolt. Recognized for his beautiful coastal landscapes, his was was chosen recently for the cover of DeSoto Magazine. In this class you will learn how to paint skies, clouds, water, trees, sandbars, marshes and other landscape elements using representational realism. This class is for all levels of painters. In this class students will learn about technical and aesthetic fundamentals of photography. Topics to be covered include: camera operations, different lenses and how the lenses interact with the camera, filters, lighting (both natural and flash). Composition, rule of thirds, cropping, and framing, as well as the proper handling of your camera will be looked at during the course of this class.

Introduction to DLSR

Have you got a DSLR camera and want to take your photography to the next level, but can't seem to get out of "automatic" mode? Then join Elizabeth Gray as she explores the features of your camera and learn the basics of ISO, aperture and shutter speed. In this hands on four-week course you will learn about: lens choice, camera modes, workflow - what to do after you take all those photos, aperture and how to control depth of field, shutter speed and when to freeze action and how to imply motion, ISO and how it relates to exposure, aperture and shutter speed, white balance and colour temperature, exposure compensation and bracketing, and when to use them, focus settings and how to control what your camera is focusing on, composition and how to make artistic images.

Intermediate DSLR Photography

The great thing about today's DSLR camera is there huge array of features. However, the not so great thing about these cameras is there huge array of features! Join Elizabeth Gray as we explore some of the hidden and more advanced features of your DSLR camera. During this course the following will be discussed: how to interpret histograms and how they relate to exposure, the difference between evaluative, center weighted and spot metering, and when to use each one, raw vs. jpeg and which is right for you, auto ISO and how to use it, auto focusing points, how many do you need, back button focusing, and other ways to help you compose images, tips for getting sharper photos.

This intermediate course is aimed at confident photographers who want to reach a higher technical and creative level. You should have a basic understanding of ISO, aperture and shutter speed and how to set them on your camera. make sure you bring your camera and manual to the class as this will be a hands-on class.

Lightroom 5 Demonstration

Do you have hundreds (or thousands) of digital images on your hone, computer and camera and want to know how to organize and edit them without having to become fluent in Photoshop?

Adobe's Lightroom 5 has all the enhancement and adjustment tools you need to make good photographs great. More importantly, lightroom is a full-powered, professional image-cataloguing tool that can organize and search tens of thousands of images.

In this evening demonstration, Elizabeth Gray will show you Lightroom's features and demonstrate how easy it is to edit your images so they can be printed, used in a slideshow, or published in a book.

Learn the fundamentals of drawing and painting! Whether you are looking to apply to a specialized art program, or just want to learn the fundamentals of drawing, this class is for you. Stained Glass Classes

Come and learn the basics of glass cutting and stained glass window construction in this five part introduction to stained glass fabrication class. Each student will learn how to cut basic shapes out of glass, soldering techniques and window assembly while creating their own piece.

French Classes

Introduction to French - 8 - 12 Year Olds

This 12 week program is designed for the beginner who has never been exposed to French. The students will learn the basics of the French language in a fun and non-competitive environment using their 5 senses. This interactive class will cover items such as: numbers, alphabet, colors, days of the week, months of the year, animals, greetings, addressing your family and pets, describing holidays and birthdays, the weather, clothes, and more fun vocabulary.

Age Requirements: 8 - 12 Year Olds

Dates: February 25, March 4, 11, 18, 25, April 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, May 6, and 13

Day and Time: Wednesdays, 3:00 - 4:00 pm

Fee: $180 (Youth Ambassador Fee)

Introduction to French - 12 - 16 Year Olds

This 12 week program is designed for the beginner who has never been exposed to French. Intermediate French

This 12 week program for intermediate students is designed for those who have already been exposed to French and wish to be able to speak it more fluently. Students will work on: pronunciation, articulation, intonation, conversation, reading practice, acting, and all of the activities will be tailored to the needs of the students in the class.

ABC's of Auditioning

The do's and don'ts of auditioning. This class is designed to answer questions about what to wear, monologues, presentation, etiquette and more.

Tools for the Actor

This class is offered to prepare you to market your talent to the film, commercial, and stage industry. The focus is on marketing your talent, head shots, and why get an agent, and more.

On Camera

This class is designed for performers who are interested in acting for TV / Film. Class participation is extremely important. The class will cover acting for commercials, soaps, and more.

Introduction to Improv

This class will focus on developing an appreciation for improvisational theatre. Students will learn the fundamental skills of improv which will also benefit them in other areas of theatrical performance or interpersonal communication. The students will learn several of the classic "theatre sports," made famous by shows such as Who's Line is it Anyway. This class will culminate in a showcase performance where the students will be able to show off their newfound skills.

FUNdamentals of Acting for Youth

Young performers will learn the FUNdamentals of acting in this 6 week class. They will learn theatrical movement and body awareness and improvisational techniques through fun games and activities. This class will conclude with a class performance showcase.

Broadway Prep

Students learn dance combinations, scenes, and songs from a major Broadway show. Video and audio of Broadway casts are used as tools to acclimate the students to the world of professional theatre. The class will conclude with a showcase featuring the students work.

Acting for Adults

Learn the fundamentals of acting using different techniques including Margolis and Meisner. Through entertaining activities and games, you will learn scene studies, character development, and audition preparation.
